OHLGS FACILITATES ZIMBABWEAN LOCAL GOVERNMENT’S TOUR OF SELECTED MMDAs IN GHANA

Accra June 22- 23, 2022: A delegation from the Zimbabwean Local Government Board and the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works are in the country on a benchmarking visit.

As part of their visit, they interacted with public officials of national-level institutions before proceeding to engage officials of selected Metropolitan, Municipal District Assemblies (MMDAs) and Regional Coordinating Councils (RCCs). The team also visited the famous Cape Coast Castle.

At the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, they were welcomed by the Chief Executive, Hon. Elizabeth Naa K. Tawiah Sackey, and her management team.  She said A.M.A is arguably the largest Local Government in Ghana, and her team is ready to share their experience with the delegation and learn from what they do.

Pertinent among the issues discussed were measures and efforts toward revenue mobilization, climate change adaptations, and waste management including the implementation of the Pollutant Change Policy (PCP). Issues of service delivery through third-party agreements were also discussed.

At the other MMDAs, similar engagements and issues were shared to increase knowledge.  The Regional Coordinating Director of CRCC, Mr. Kingsley Adjei Boahen also shed light on how their role is harnessed to ensure proper supervision of the MMDAs and their activities. Some of the topics discussed included gender role management, where it was discovered that women in Zimbabwe receive about 30% of the benefits of gender inclusivity.

Mr. Adjei Boahen used the occasion to inform the group about the upcoming Central EXPO 2022 tourism and investment tour and urged them to visit the event to witness the diverse rich cultures of the Central Region.

The delegation’s final destination was the historical Cape Coast Castle, where they learned about Ghana’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade.
