OHLGS ORGANISES ORIENTATION TRAINING FOR NEWLY RECRUITED STAFF

A series of two-day orientation workshops for newly recruited officers of the Local Government Service in 2018 has commenced and is taking place concurrently in four (4) places; Accra, Kumasi, Koforidua and Elmina.

The orientation was to expose the newly recruited staff to their work environment in addition to the legislation and policies that guide local governance practices in Ghana. It was also to acquaint them on the demands of their roles and responsibilities; and the requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for effective performance at the local level.

At the opening of the Accra session for Assistant Programmers, the Regional Co-ordinating Director for the Greater Accra Region, Mr Ernest Nyagbe challenged the new officers to be team players and assist in the effective mobilisation and utilisation of financial and material resources at the local level. He said resources were scarce hence Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) must step up resource mobilisation efforts to fund development interventions as complement to that of central government.

The Head of Service, Dr Nana Ato Arthur entreated the newly recruited officers to be good ambassadors of the Service and urged them to demonstrate a high sense of professionalism in the discharge of their duties. He said the Local Government Service would ensure that Assemblies had the critical staff required to prosecute their mandates.

Over the two-day period, the Assistant Programmers would be enlightened on the Protocols, leadership and management of the Service. Other topics to be treated include LGS IT Policy, Basics of Data Management, storage, Security and Risk Management as well as the Relevance of Open Source Data Systems.

A total of one thousand and fifty (1,050) newly recruited staff posted to the various Regional Co-ordinating Council’s (RCCS) and MMDAs were expected to participate in the orientation training. Other job classes required to participate in similar training include Human Resource Managers, Statisticians, Engineers and Technician Engineers, Procurement officers, Catering officers and Drivers.
