EXECUTIVES OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT SERVICE WORKERS UNION CALLS ON HEAD OF SERVICE

Accra-Thursday January 28, 2021: The 2021-2024 National Executive body of the Local Government Workers Union (LGWU) paid a courtesy call on the Head of Local Government Service, Ing. Dr. Nana Ato Arthur to officially introduce themselves to him and to draw attention to some concerns of Staff.

The 10-member executive body was led by its Chairman, Mr. Moses Awenkanab Awarikaro, a Works Engineer at the Kassena Nanka Municipal Assembly. Pertinent among the concern raised were: proposal for all staff of the Service to be paid honorarium; delayed promotion for some categories of staff; and the neglect of Environmental Health Officers from the list of frontline workers in the fight against COVID-19.

The Head of Service appreciated the concerns raised and addressed them accordingly. On the issue of honorarium, he assured that measures are underway to ensure fairness in the provision of benefits to all staff. With regards to promotions, the Head of Service indicated that there is an ongoing process to review the promotion regime with the aim to address bottlenecks and related challenges. He added that the concerns of the Environmental Health Officers have been forwarded to the appropriate quarter for redress.

Dr Arthur also used the opportunity to draw the attention of the executives to advise their members to be wary of vices such as absenteeism and lateness; involvement in partisan politics and the leakage of official information. He urged the executives to use all available platforms to sensitise their members to meticulously discharge their duties to avoid audit infraction which can lead to being surcharged in accordance with the PFM Act.

Also present at the meeting were some senior staff at the Office of the Head of Local Government Service (OHLGS).
