Ada – 27th February, 2017: The Head of Service (HoS), Dr. Callistus Mahama briefed members of the newly constituted Parliamentary Select Committee on Local Government and Rural Development on the operations of the LGS – a public service institution mandated to secure the effective administration and management of the decentralised local governance system in the country.
At a workshop to orient members of the Committee on the operations of Ministries and Agencies in local governance, the Head of the Local Government Service took participants through the roles, functions, major policy interventions, on-going projects and other pertinent issues including achievements and challenges of the Service.
Dr. Mahama stated that the Service is poised to discharge its duties efficiently despite the numerous challenges. He indicated that the continuous support of Development Partners (DPs) have immensely contributed to the successful implementation of numerous projects and programmes. He said, the future of the country depends on responsive local authorities hence the need for a more proactive approach to fiscal decentralisation thereby ensuring their full autonomy.
Other agencies who briefed the Committee included the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and some private agencies whose work bother on sanitation management at the MMDA level.
