LOCAL GOVERNMENT SERVICE AND GHANA STANDARD AUTHORITY SIGNS MoU

Accra – Tuesday September 17, 2019: The Local Government Service (LGS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ghana Standard Authority (GSA) at the Standard Heights Building in Accra to enhance and strengthen technical co-operation in the areas of standardization, Metrology and Conformity Assessment. The MoU which was signed by the Head of Service, Dr. Nana Ato Arthur on behalf of the LGS and the Director General of GSA, Prof. Alex Dodoo was witnessed by Directors of the Office of the Head of Local Government Service (OHLGS) and staff of the GSA as well as the media. Also present was the Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee (IMCC) on Decentralisation, Ing. Salifu Mahama.

The Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Adjei Boateng said the Ministry is ready to provide the needed direction for the successful achievement of the goal of the MoU. He said the collaboration would provide an opportunity to ensure that laws are practicable and workable.

Prof. Alex Dodoo was elated about the partnership with the LGS as the collaboration would help to exchange necessary information and expertise between the two institutions to promote and ensure effective and efficient service delivery. He thanked the Head of the Local Government Service and his team for making the process a reality and looked forward to a stronger collaboration in the future.

Dr. Arthur said, in the discharge of its mandate, the LGS is responsible for the development of professional and technical standards for service delivery at the sub-national levels. He added that the partnership would provide the two institutions opportunity to leverage on their strategic roles to guide and ensure adherence to the highest levels of technical standards in the delivery of services at the regional and district levels. He was hopeful that the agreement will enhance achievement of the mandates of both institutions particularly, adherence to the newly developed Building Code. He noted that the Service would build capacities of its staff to develop the needed skills and competence to ensure they are up to the task. He stated that the Service would continue to collaborate with GSA for the gradual extension of the project to all parts of the country.
