MAXIMIZING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN GHANA: A CALL TO ACTION BY ING. DR. NANA ATO ARTHUR

Accra – Wednesday, 26th June, 2024: The Head of the Local Government Service, Ing. Dr. Nana Ato Arthur has emphasized the need for a conscious maximization of sustainable development to enhance economic progress in Ghana. Referencing Chapter 6, Article 36 (1) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, he reiterated the State’s duty to manage the national economy in a way that maximizes economic development and secures the maximum welfare, freedom, and happiness for every Ghanaian, while providing adequate means of livelihood, suitable employment, and public assistance to those in need.

Dr. Arthur made this call during the official launch of Ghana’s 2023 National Human Development Report. The event was organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in collaboration with the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) and the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), under the theme: “The Future Value of Work in Ghana: Pathways to Sustainable Jobs.”

The Human Development Report is a flagship publication of the UNDP that focuses on topical development issues. It aims to enrich policy discussions and provide analytical tools to countries worldwide, including Ghana. The 2023 report, a product of extensive research, nationwide consultations, and collaboration, serves as a critical resource for policymakers, development practitioners, and other stakeholders in shaping strategies for sustainable development in Ghana.
