ASSEMBLY MEMBERS CAN BETTER PERFORM THEIR ROLES IF EMPOWERED – DR. ATO ARTHUR

Kumasi – Wednesday, March 24, 2021: The Head of the Local Government Service, Ing. Dr. Nana Ato Arthur has advocated the need to empower Assembly Members in recognition of their critical role in deepening decentralisation and local governance. According to him, Assembly Members are local level vanguards, particularly in ensuring accountability by District Assemblies in the delivery of improved services to the citizenry. Dr. Arthur made the call in an interview on the sidelines of its morning show on Wontumi TV. He intimated that the exigencies of the times require that Assembly Members be remunerated to enable them work as pivot of participatory democracy at the grassroots level.

The Head of Service was in the Ashanti Region to monitor the end of year assessment of the implementation of a set of agreed deliverables contained in the performance contracts signed between honourable Regional Ministers and their Regional Co-ordinating Directors and also between honourable Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and their respective Co-ordinating Directors for the year 2020. He was accompanied by some technical teams commissioned by the Service to undertake the end of year assessment of performance contracts. The exercise which begun on March 9, 2021 is expected to end in April, 2021.
