ENSURE FUNCTIONAL PHYSICAL PLANNING DEPARTMENTS IN THE DISTRICT ASSEMBLIES

Ho-Sunday February 13, 2022: Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) have been charged to ensure a fully functional Physical Planning Department in anticipation of the government’s efforts to revamp the department to meet international standards. The Minister for Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development, Honorable Daniel Botwe made this call at the ongoing refresher course in Ho for MMDCEs from the Greater Accra, Volta, and Oti Regions.

According to Honorable Botwe, Parks and Gardens have been identified as the most effective vehicle to drive the Greening Ghana Agenda. He urged the MMDCEs to commit to ensuring that the department functions as required. He added that the department is provided with basic logistics and technical support to enable greening the frontage of the offices of the respective Assemblies.

The Head of the Local Government Service Ing. Dr. Nana Ato Arthur also informed of plans by the Service to recruit lower-grade staff to augment and address gaps in respect of technical and other auxiliary staff needs of the MMDAs. He urged the MMDCEs to ensure effective supervision and monitoring of staff within their jurisdictions for optimum performance.

The Physical Planning Department is a decentralized department operationalized through the merger of the Department of Parks and Gardens and the erstwhile Town & Country Planning Department now Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority.

The zonal refresher course which began on Saturday, February 12, 2022, is expected to end on Monday, February 14, 2022.
