On Tuesday 16th August, 2016, the newly elected executives of the Local Government Workers Union (LGWU) were introduced to the Management of LGSS in a familiarization meeting held at the Conference Room of the Local Government Service Secretariat (LGSS). Present at the meeting were the Head of Service (HoS), Dr. Callistus Mahama, the Chief Director at the Secretariat and the full complement of the LGSS Management team.
The HoS welcomed the executives of LGWU and congratulated them on their election. He said, the working relationship between the Service and LGWU over the years had been that of comradeship and not adversarial. He therefore urged the new leadership to maintain and deepen the existing working relationship.
The LGWU Executives were advised as follows:
• Use dialogue to resolve labour issues rather than resort to strikes
• Rebrand LGWU to reposition it on the labour landscape
• Strive for unity to ensure a common frontier
• Encourage more women to aspire to be elected into leadership positions
• Reach out to the LGSS through the Public Affairs Officer (liaison)
LGWU Executives also identified the following as challenges:
• Lack of logistics including vehicles for work
• Revision of LGWU bargaining certificate
