The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) held a massive clean-up exercise on April 12, 2025, marking the commencement of the maiden edition of AshantiFest. This initiative aims to showcase the rich culture and traditions of the Ashanti Region.
The ten-day celebration is packed with a variety of exciting activities, including sports, fashion shows, health awareness campaigns, educational programs, tourism activities, and sanitation efforts.
In alignment with the government’s commitment to promoting environmental cleanliness and sustainable waste management practices, Dr. Amoakohene introduced the Ashanti Sanitation and Greening Initiative as a key component of AshantiFest. This initiative will concentrate on three primary areas: cleanup campaigns, effective waste management, and urban greening efforts designed to enhance the environmental.
The cleanup exercise itself covered significant areas within the Greater Kumasi Metropolis, focusing on locations such as Doctor Mensah, the Kejetia roundabout, the Kwame Antwi area, the Kumasi Zoo vicinity, the Otumfour roundabout, and included a mop-up operation at Alabar. This extensive effort was observed across the entire region, underscoring a collective commitment to improving the local environment.
The exercise was spearheaded by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who was accompanied by Mr. Michael Owusu Amoako, the Chief Director of the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, as well as members of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC).
After the clean up exercise, Dr. Frank Amoakohene spoke to the media, praising the residents of Kumasi and the Ashanti Region for demonstrating a commendable communal spirit during the clean-up exercise. He emphasized the critical importance of maintaining environmental cleanliness and urged the community to fully embrace the Ashanti Sanitation and Greening Initiative as a way to foster a healthier and more sustainable living environment.
Dr. Amoakohene also expressed concern regarding the troubling practice of clandestinely dumping refuse in unauthorized areas. He cautioned individuals who engage in such activities to cease immediately, warning that those who are caught will face legal consequences. He reiterated the shared responsibility of every citizen to protect and cherish their environment, highlighting that a cleaner, greener Ashanti Region is a collective goal that can only be achieved through active participation and cooperation from all stakeholders.
